“Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour” (John 4:5-6).
When we read John 4:1-42, we are often blind to the fact that this part of the Gospel is pinned to “Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well”. If Jesus Christ was not wearied there would have been no discourse between Him and the Samaritan woman. The young prophet of Judah to Bethel sat under an oak tree and he died untimely; Jesus sat on a well.
The concerned verses show the human nature of Jesus as He was wearied. Secondly, women scarcely fetched water about the sixth hour. But the most important thing is that the well speaks of the source or supply of water. There is a time we feel exhausted and seek to rest. The problem of some is that we do not rest at the well.
Jesus after a hard day’s work sat at the well; anyone who follows Him will at a point in time be weary and will need water. The source of our water is the well and Jesus is the answer. In these last days, resting under an oak tree will not help us regain strength to continue our journey. We must rest in the bosom of the Lord and he will fill us with His Spirit to endure to the end. We must delight in the places we rest.
*PRAYER: Lord Jesus, help me delight in resting in You. *AMEN*
MEMORY VERSE: “And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” John 11:26 (KJV)
Jesus Christ has promised to give abundant life to all those who believe in Him. His resurrection from the dead is enough reason to tell us that the life in Him is greater than the power of death. In the memory verse of today, Jesus is telling us that there is hope for the living. Unlike the dead, the living are privileged to acknowledge Him as their Lord.
He is the only source of life which is needed by all of us. It is rather unfortunate to know that there are some people who still find it hard to believe the Gospel account on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. For those who seek the truth in historical records apart from the one presented by the Holy Bible, the account of a renowned historian like Flavius Josephus will help them.
Flavius Joseph was an ancient Jewish historian who wrote to confirm the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to his account, Jesus Christ was condemned to death by Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor in charge of Jewish province. Josephus said, *”He appeared to them alive again”* on the third day as *”the divine prophets having foretold these and many other wonderful things concerning Him.”*
This is the right time to make decisions which will make us live eternally. We can do so by connecting our lives to the purpose for which Jesus Christ saved us. He had the power to lay down His life for us and take it back. He is the God of the living and not of the dead. We need to honour Him by living our lives in believing Him and obeying His holy commandments.
His tremendous power over death makes Him the God of life. He showers blessings on every good thing we do for living, answers our requests, protects and preserves our families, and gives us eternal life. As we don’t know when we shall naturally die, we have to always die to sin so as to live eternally with Him.
*PRAYER: Heavenly Father, grace me with the oil to live for you always, in Jesus name. AMEN*
“As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the LORD, we will not hearken unto thee” (Jer. 44:16KJV).
In the aftermath of the captivity of Judah to Babylon, a remnant went to dwell in Egypt against God’s will. The Word of the Lord came to Jeremiah concerning them. God’s wrath was kindled against them to punish them. He sent His prophets to warn them against idolatry, but they didn’t hearken unto the words of their Maker.
The dwelling Jews in Egypt answered Jeremiah that they won’t obey God’s words he has spoken. They vowed to continue their idolatry irrespective of the warnings of God. This is gross disobedience!
Hypocritical Christians are daring the Word of God; They take the Word of God and His Name in vain through their lifestyles. The torments of disobedient Christians in hell exceed all; they dwell in the center of hell. It’s time to live in accordance with the Word of God. It’s time to adorn yourself with the holiness and righteousness of God. It’s time to be heavenly minded!
PRAYER: Thank You Lord for Your Words. Please adorn me with Your character.
“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? It is therefore good for nothing but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot of men”
Salt is the commonest mineral yet most precious in cooking. It is used to preserve food and it adds flavour to our diet. In the past, its scarcity and universal need caused nations to go to war over it. The word salary comes from the Latin word for salt and the word salad literally means “salted”, and comes from the ancient Roman practice of salting leafy vegetables.
Jesus told us we are the salt of the earth; this particular verse hints on the taste salt adds to food. Jesus meant we are the hope of this world. We have tasted and seen that the Lord is good; we must allow others to taste God’s goodness in us. When anyone interacts with us, such a person must have the hope that walking in the Lord will add sweetness to his life.
Our lives must enhance and give meaning to this world. If we preach the Gospel, the hearers will appreciate God’s salvation for them- they will see goodness in the Gospel and the need to walk in holiness. We must not settle for preaching, but walk according to the Gospel. We must demonstrate love, patience, humility and have the power to endure all things especially in these end times. If we fail to exhibit these, then we cannot season the lives of others.
*PRAYER: Heavenly Father, fill me with Your Spirit to be salt to others. *AMEN*
*Memory verse:* John:8:44
“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”
We live in an era where the fear of God has been substituted for lies. My heart aches when a Christian places excuse above God’s word so as to sin, trying to manoeuvre his way around God’s word.
The devil tricked Eve and Adam into eating a fruit from the tree God warned them to not eat from. The devil did this on the principle of _half truth_. He, after convincing Eve that she shall not die on taking the fruit went on saying; “For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil” Genesis 3:5. This statement was indeed true because, God said in Genesis 3:22 that “…Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”. This shows that the devil did not entirely lie to man, he hid a part of the truth, which is that, man shall experience pain and death.
Looking at the consequences of this half truth today, only confirms how dangerous half truth can be. Many Christians have adopted this strategy and instead of being completely honest they try manoeuvering their way around the set principles of God. This in effect is more dangerous than complete dishonesty. “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do… because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it” John 8:44, therefore anyone that deceives is a child of the devil and cannot inherit the kingdom of God.
Christians must learn to be truthful and exterminate any pinch of deception in us. We must be truthful in all circumstances. We must understand that the word of God is infallible, therefore one cannot and should not try at all to find a way around it.
*PRAYER:* Dear Lord Jesus Christ, please help me stay completely honest in my everyday actions just as you did here on earth.*AMEN*
